Kitchen planning is the very first step and the most important for a successful remodel. Remodeling a kitchen is a large undertaking, and better planned in stages to give time for thought and research. This will be further explained. Depending on your skill level you may want to hire a professional to do the work
Kitchen planning begins by assessing your needs
You should begin kitchen planning by discussing changes and improvements with your spouse. Give your kitchen a good honest visual appraisal and determine the changes that are needed. What are the main functions performed in your kitchen? Do you bake and cook and find the surface space to be inadequate, or are you finding that storage is a problem?Form a list of projected improvements, adding as you think of others.
Your next action will be developing a crude sketch that you will improve later. Form a sketch that shows the shape and size of your kitchen. Graph paper works well for this, and it is good to make extras copies in it’s primary blank stage. Once you have copies, take one and draw cabinets and kitchen appliiances where you think they are well placed. You’ll need accurate measurements, and each measurement should be noted on your rough plan.
Kitchen planning requires updated and accurate information
Now that you have a rough drawing and measurements, it is time to take it with you and do some comparison shopping. You have a list of what you want, and it is good to see what the market currently has to offer. Since this will be a new kitchen, you want to be fully aware of new improvements in appliances, materials, cabinetry etc. so your freshly remodeled kitchen will be right with the times. Set adequate time and confine it to price shopping only, making notations of prices, models, and measurements etc.
Home improvement is a large industry with a lot of competition. You’ll find this an advantage as you shop, and note price differences from one supplier to another. By pricing needed materials and fixtures, knowing what measurements you are dealing with and gathering other necessary information, you will be in a position to create a final plan.
Determining a budget factors into kitchen planning
The kitchen planning process will probably take you some time. After drawing together valuable and necessary info you can make some of the final decisions. How you set a budget for your kitchen remodel is an important issue and should be figured closely.
This might be the place where you want to discuss whether you are willing to reuse items you currently have.
For instance:
1. Should you reface your current cabinets and use the savings for other features?
2. Are solid granite countertops a necessity or would you concede to cut costs?
3. If necessary which are you most willing to give up, the travertine floor or the granite countertop?
These are just sample questions, your issues may be different, but unless you have unlimited funds this is a good process to use as you refine your kitchen remodeling plan.
Kitchen planning is not wasted time even if you plan to hire professionals. Giving over a clear plan will be of benefit if you decide to hire the work done. This will enable your contractor to have a better idea just what it is you want.
