Thousands of folks are getting on the Internet to post their own blogs. These blogs can be about an almost unlimited number of topics – from fine art to fast food, from religion to plumbing, and everything in between. It’s clear that the Internet has truly made it possible for anyone to share their thoughts with the entire world.

Even though blogging is a lot fun (and very theraputic in some cases), those in the know are writing blogs to actually make an impressive income from home. With nothing but a computer, an Internet connection, and a bit of hard work, these people are blogging for dollars. Just how are they managing to do this while most bloggers out there are not making anything?

As a general overview, making money from blogging requires three basic ingreidents:

Creating Content

Every blog requires a good amount content. Without any useful content, visitors will never stay on your blog to read anything. Online, content is indeed king. To begin, consider what you would like to be blogging about. Did you just get a new puppy and are trying to housebreak him? Why not start a blog that talks about the various housebreaking techniques you’ve tried? As you can probably tell, blogs can be about anything under the sun, and if you create one about something you like, chances are it will not even feel like work in the slightest!

While writing your content, one thing to remember is not to worry too much about perfect grammar. It’s generally best not to use too much formal language and insteaduse a more conversational style. Not only is this easier for the visitor to read and understand, but it will also give your blog a bit of your own personality. Just write as if you were speaking to a good friend across the dinner table. Even if you don’t consider yourself a writer, you’ll find that the words flow quite easily using this method.

Attracting Visitors

The second part of the blogging formula is traffic – getting visitors to locate and read the excellent content you’ve written in part one. There are generally two ways to get traffic to your blog, and each has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s look at both of these methods in turn:

Paid Traffic

Essentially, this is known as advertising, such as banner advertising or pay-per-click. If you’ve got more money than time, this is a very good way to generate traffic to your blog in a really short period of time. You can apply for a Google Adwords account and start bidding on keywords that relate to your blog’s subject. To help you come up with keywords, you can use Google’s popular free keyword tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). In the beginning, try to look for keywords that are “long tail” – keywords that are being searched for, but have relatively less competition. These are usually 3-5 word phrases instead of phrases of one or two keywords. This will keep your cost per click low as you see how your blog does. While paid advertising can deliver traffic in a hurry, it is, of course, going to cost you some dough.

Free Traffic

The second way is to generate free traffic. This variation is not going to really cost you anything dollar wise, but it takes more time and effort compared to a paid traffic method. If you’re short on dough, finding out how to generate free traffic to your blog is an essential skill.

Making Money

Once you’ve got traffic coming to read your blog, it’s time to monetize that traffic. One simple way to do this is by becoming an affiliate for a pre-existing product. Websites such as Commission Junction, Linkshare, and Clickbank make it easy to introduce other people’s products and put money in your pocket every time you refer a sale. After you sign up for an account, you will gain access to a a boatload of products and services that you could be promoting on your blog.
