So you want to start your own personal blog, but you have no idea how to write a blog post. You’ve heard it’s pretty easy: you come up with a topic, write about 250 words about it and hit “post”. Awesome!
But then… nobody reads it and you can’t figure out why.
After all, you think you wrote something interesting enough to get the readers’ attention. And in the meantime, some crappy blogs on the most common topics get 3000 visitors daily and that can only convert into a lot of money for the owner.
You certainly want to know how that is possible so let’s get into it! What makes a blog post so good that people are drawn to it and they praise the blogger even though there are thousands of people that could write better content?
It’s all about structure and optimization.
Come again? But I was under the impression that the most important thing is to write about an exciting subject. And it took me hours to make it sound just right!
Of course content IS significant. You don’t write something just to fill in some space and then wait for visitors to show up. But there are some more aspects that make a blog post a lot more appealing.
Before you even start writing, you need to be sure about your topic and choose the best keywords. Aim for laser-sharp focus on certain keywords or key phrases in your blog post but not too many, one or two are enough! Keep in mind that search engines don’t care about the passion you put into writing that article, they are just looking for relevant content on particular topics.
The building blocks of an article are: the title, the body and the tags. All of them are VERY important when it comes to writing a compelling blog post, they are what search engines analyze in order to establish their rankings.
Blog Post Title
If you want your post to even be given the light of day, its title must include your targeted keywords. If your chosen subject is “how to train a pitbull” then your title should definitely be “How to Train a Pitbull” or something along those lines, like “Pitbull Training Tricks”.
The title is the first thing that’s being analyzed by search engines and you will never find something about, say, becoming debt-free among the first search results for dog training.
The Body
The content itself is not so restrictive. Actually, writing “pitbull training, pitbull training” over and over again will not get you higher ranks. You only need to use the keywords occasionally so it will be obvious that the text does indeed pertain to its title.
Related keywords like “dog behavior” or “dog food” will also be identified by the search engines and will count in their analysis of your article’s relevance.
The Tags
Tags are truly the unsung heroes of blog posts: paramount yet often going unnoticed.
Tags (or keywords) are short phrases, highly-related to the article’s subject, that contribute to its relevance.
In keeping with the pitbull training topic, your article can contain tags like “guard dog training” or “aggressive dog training”.
I personally think about my articles’ tags before starting to write the content. If you want your blog to attract visitors, you need to write about things that people care about, and for that you need to do some keyword research before anything else.
